About the Note
In H.G. Wells' "The Treasure in the Forest," two men, a young sailor and an older, experienced companion, are marooned in a remote forest after a shipwreck. They discover a map leading to a hidden treasure buried deep within the forest. Driven by greed, they follow the map, overcoming various natural obstacles. As they near the treasure, they become increasingly distrustful and paranoid of each other, which strains their fragile alliance. Their journey culminates in a violent confrontation over the treasure. In the end, it is revealed that the treasure was a ruse, a trap set by the forest itself to lure and destroy those who are consumed by greed. Their quest for riches leads only to their own demise, illustrating the story's themes of avarice and the deceptive nature of wealth.
